What began as a quest to secure our Chinese visas quickly spiraled into an adventure packed with mishaps, mac and cheese (with pork belly, of course), and a tattoo convention that stretched the limits of my creative inspiration.

The Visa Quest

Our trip kicked off with a two-and-a-half-hour drive into downtown Chicago, guided by the little dot on our GPS. When we arrived, the absence of signs or flags left us questioning whether we’d landed at the Chinese Consulate or just another anonymous office building behind a Subway. After a few loops around the block and a failed attempt to consult a cop, we finally parked and entered the lobby—a tall, plain space where you could catch glimpses of the other floors above.

Inside, a woman in uniform asked us if we were there for the Consulate and promptly sent us outside to wait in the cold. After an hour shivering in line, we were at last allowed inside, only to sign in, ride an elevator to the fourth floor, and join yet another queue. The final hurdle? A metal detector and a request for a paper with a barcode. No barcode, no entry—regardless of what the website claimed about appointments. Our mission abruptly ended there; the elusive barcode had bested us.

Villain Arts Tattoo Convention

With our visa plans dashed, we had time to kill before the tattoo convention opened at 2 p.m. We wandered down to Navy Pier, enjoyed a leisurely lunch, snapped some photos, and waited out the hours. Rich—ever the hotel master—found us a great deal just a block from the convention center, although we couldn’t check in until 4 p.m. At least we scored a $28 parking garage for the night, which felt like a minor victory.

When doors finally opened at the Rosemont Convention Center, the sheer scale was staggering: over 400 artists packed into rows, each offering a dizzying array of styles. Performers entertained the crowds with suspension acts, fire breathing, sword swallowing, and circus feats. We explored, inspected tattoo options, and sampled mac and cheese—Rich’s with smoked gouda and pork belly, mine with spicy pimento and pork belly. Both were delicious and, frankly, excessive.

Eventually, inspiration struck. I chose Hard Life Style Tattoo, drawing from Chicago’s history: the first World’s Fair, the legacy of H.H. Holmes, and the iconic Ferris wheel at Navy Pier. My new ink—a burning Ferris wheel with the fair in the background—captured the city’s spirit and its storied past.

Richie, initially uncertain about getting a tattoo, was convinced by Giovani’s promise to work quickly. He braved the ordeal, ending up with a striking microphone tattoo topped with a skull, strategically covering an old piece. Despite the pain, the result was beautiful, with barely any scabbing.

Exploring the Field Museum

Day two brought us to the Field Museum. It had been years since my last visit, and I’d forgotten how massive it truly was—it took nearly five hours to see it all. The exhibits ranged from single-celled organisms to taxidermized lions and woolly mammoths. One highlight was the actual lion from “The Ghost and the Darkness,” which famously terrorized railway workers in Tsavo, Kenya in 1898. Seeing the lion’s enormous form made the legends feel real.

The Evolving Planet Exhibit dazzled with thousands of creatures, but it was Dinosaur Hall that stole my heart. “Sue,” the largest, most complete Tyrannosaurus rex fossil in the world, stood in all her glory, magnificent as ever. The Ancient Egypt exhibit was less impressive—many pieces missing for refurbishment—but wandering through the halls still brought a sense of discovery.

Lake Michigan and Willis Tower

After leaving the museum, we found a frozen margarita stand—mango was the only flavor left, which wasn’t my favorite, but the birria tacos more than made up for it. Both Rich and I have been attending gigs for years, long before we even met each other. Rich often went with his mom to see legends like Tina Turner, Billy Joel, and Prince, while my personal highlights include Norah Jones, Jack Johnson, and Sheryl Crow. But, our shared love for hard rock and metal is what really brings us together.

Flashback to 1995: Nine Inch Nails was set to play in Moline, IL—a show both of us actually had tickets for! Unfortunately, a snowstorm grounded all flights and the concert was cancelled, never to be rescheduled nearby. We didn’t realize until much later that we’d both been planning to go to that same concert. Small world, right?

Fast forward nearly thirty years, and Nine Inch Nails finally announced a gig in St. Louis—the closest city for us, but still a solid five-hour drive away. As soon as tickets went on sale, we grabbed ours for the February show. Coming off a long vacation, we were definitely still a bit jet-lagged, so we booked a hotel near the venue and used ride-sharing to keep things easy (especially with some classic Midwest winter weather thrown in).

Inside the arena, food options abounded—even if the prices gave us pause. We snagged drinks and some merch before finding our seats. While we usually opt for general admission, this time around we decided on arena seats for budget reasons. Speed, strength, and athleticism matter, but they don’t measure the qualities that actually determine NFL success — heart, toughness, character, and the ability to handle adversity. Those traits never show up on a stopwatch.

That’s why the draft remains the most important part of roster building. Teams that dig deeper than combine metrics — into background, work ethic, leadership, and football IQ — are the ones that consistently find long‑term contributors.

The Bears Must Protect Their Draft Picks

As a Chicago Bears fan, I firmly believe the team should guard its future draft capital. Trading multiple picks for one star player sounds exciting, but it often means sacrificing three or four potential starters for a single piece. Occasionally, that gamble pays off. Most of the time, it doesn’t.

Take the idea of trading for Maxx Crosby. He’s an elite pass rusher and a potential Hall of Famer. But if the price is two first‑round picks, a third‑round pick, and a quality player, that’s four assets for one guy. Those first‑rounders should become starters — maybe even stars — and there’s still no guarantee Crosby alone pushes the Bears to a Super Bowl.

Compensatory Picks and Front Office Drama

Behind the scenes, the Bears are also fighting for additional draft capital. They believe they should receive two compensatory third‑round picks after former assistant GM Ian Cunningham was hired by the Falcons. Confusion around comments made by Matt Ryan led the Bears to appeal to the NFL, hoping to secure those valuable selections.

If the appeal succeeds, Chicago could walk into the draft with a strong cluster of middle‑round picks — the kind that build depth and long‑term stability.

Roster Changes and Cap Space Strategy

The Bears’ offseason moves suggest a clear plan. Their starting center retired, creating an immediate need. At the same time, the team has been aggressively clearing salary cap space.

DJ Moore was traded to Buffalo for a second‑round pick, freeing cap room and adding draft capital.

Tremaine Edmunds was released, creating even more financial flexibility.

Given the Bears’ depth at wide receiver, moving Moore — the oldest in the group — made sense. The question now is whether these moves are setting the stage for something bigger: a major trade like Crosby or a top‑tier free‑agent signing at center.

A Potential Draft Windfall

If the Bears end up with two second‑round picks and two compensatory third‑rounders, they’ll be in a powerful position. Multiple picks in both rounds would allow them to add several young, cost‑controlled players — the foundation of a sustainable roster.

There’s also the possibility of trading quarterback Tyson Bagent. I like the kid, but he’s only under contract through next season. If the Bears don’t plan to extend him, they risk losing him for nothing. If a team is willing to offer a second‑round pick, that’s tremendous value and more flexibility for a major move.

What It All Means for the Bears’ Future

When you look at the Bears’ recent decisions, two goals become clear:

Create enough cap space to pursue a star pass rusher like Maxx Crosby.

Strengthen the roster through multiple second‑ and third‑round draft picks.

If the Bears can maintain strong draft capital while adding key veterans at center and pass rusher, they’ll be building for both immediate competitiveness and long‑term success.

Written by Rich Lopeman Why the Bears’ Future Depends on Smart Draft Capital — Not Flashy Trades Every year, the NFL Combine dominates the headlines, but let’s be real: it’s mostly a workout with numbers attached. We recently took on two mobile homes to renovate, and I can’t wait to bring you along for the ride.

The first project is a single wide mobile home in Davenport, IA. My personal connection to this journey started a few years ago when I purchased a mobile home for my son. If there’s one crucial tip I can give you from my experiences, it’s this: always hire a qualified inspector before you buy any property. It’s a step you definitely don’t want to skip!

The second mobile home came to us in a rather unique way. While hosting a coat drive on Facebook, I met a kind woman who dropped off some coats. Like everyone else who stopped by, I handed her Rich’s business card. She later reached out because she inherited a double-wide mobile home after her daughter-in-law’s passing and needed help cleaning it out for the mobile home park. We offered to take it off her hands entirely, and to our delight, she agreed!

As a fun bonus, when we first walked into the double-wide, we were greeted by a large cat with stunning eyes. The cat immediately jumped onto the back of a chair facing Rich, and they had an instant connection. That’s how we became the proud parents of Manungai, named after the Chicago Bears’ rookie running back!

The home itself needed a lot of TLC. At first glance, it didn’t seem too bad, but once we started tearing into the renovation, we discovered extensive water damage and rot throughout. My son, who was just starting his carpentry apprenticeship at the time, was supposed to help with the work, but after a few years with little progress, I took back the project when he moved in with his girlfriend.

Now, after a lot of hard work, we’ve gutted the interior, replaced all the rotten sections, and are finally moving on to the fun cosmetic updates. Today was a huge win—we scored countertops for just $75 and cabinets for $250! We do have to drive two and a half hours to Chicago to pick them up, but for what we’re getting, it’s worth every mile. The countertops are a beautiful white with gray streaks, and we’ll be refinishing the cabinets ourselves.

I’ll keep you all updated and post pictures as we make progress. Stay tuned for more of our renovation adventure, and don’t forget the golden rule: always get an inspection before you buy!

From Community Connections to Unexpected Finds Hello all you Happies! Whether you’re seeking tropical sunshine without the swelter or eager to dive into festive holiday traditions, there’s no better time to pack your bags.

Best places to travel during the Holidays; Lets start with Halloween

The Medieval Midwest

For those local to the Midwest and not looking to go to far, Galena Illinois boasts a spectacular event drawing in thousands of little monsters from all over the nation called Galeen-o-ween. It is jam packed with floats that run along Galena’s Main street for 2 ½ hrs

But don’t worry, you can still pop in and get food and refreshments at many of the soda pop establishments or an adult bev at the numerous bars and restaurants where all the staff is representing their festive spirits in their own costumes. There are a few adorable Air B&Bs to stay in but they book up quickly. You can make a cute weekend out of it by staying 15 minutes away in Dubuque, Iowa and enjoy the Fenelon Place Elevator Company and take a ride on the shortest and steepest trolley car in the world. At the top you have amazing sites of the Worlds 3rd largest river, the Mighty Mississippi as well as three states, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin. You can also test your luck at the Q Casino.

For the Brave

If you are a little more dangerous, check out Salem Massachusetts, West Hollywood California or New Orleans Louisiana. Salem has a haunting past notarized by the Salem Witches and is self-proclaimed the Halloween capitol of the world. There is even a Halloween Museum! But the parade happenes on the 1st Thursday of October but don’t worry there are plenty of events for Halloween. Check out the events calendar here. For something on a more cinematic event, first launching in 1987, it is the 40th anniversary of the West Hollywood Carnaval. It is a grandeur affair drawing many celebrities and enthusiasts alike. The carnival is hosted along Santa Monica Boulevard from N. Doheny Drive to N. La Cienega Boulevard for 5 hours with live DJs, food trucks and just a huge Halloween Bash! New Orleans sports an entire other level of Halloween Parade. The Krewe of Boo Parade is a spectacle all of its own. Originally starting as a fund raiser after Hurricane Katrina, this parade has become a beloved tradition for the people of New Orleans and those brave enough to partake. There is a Happy Hour in the Square at Pat O’Briens, viewing parties, a Monster Mash and a dance off to name a few events.

If you desire something more traditional and that is steeped in culture check out San Antonia for their famous Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Parade. This is one of my personal favs! The Muertos Fest launches the festivities in the San Antonio community of Hemisfair. Locals brandish spooktacular costumes and floats to honor their departed loved ones. There is also the River Parade along the famous River Walk, yet another unforgettable event.

Halloween around the World

If you want to travel abroad and experience how the rest of the world celebrates, as to be expected, Bran Romania, located in the Transylvania Region, has a extraordinary 2-day party at Castle Bran (Dracula’s Castle). This is a party that includes the entire flea market outside of the castle and you can visit the haunted town of Brasov right down the street to titillate your fancy.

If your taste takes you more towards the ceremonial Dia De Los Muertos, then Mexico is your go-to. Mexico City offers a fabulous ceremony but the real heritage is celebrated more in Oaxaca. The actual origin is controversial but it will still be an epic experience regardless.

However, if you really want the ultimate experience, Derry Ireland has the largest Halloween party of them all. After all, this is where is started over 2000 years ago. It was a celebration for the winter harvest and mixed in with the pagan traditions of the ancient Samhain festival. Spanning 4 days with an average of 80,000 visitors each year it is by far the largest event for Halloween. Here is an interesting article on Newgrange.com about the history of the Samhain Festival and its traditions.

Final Thoughts

Whether you desire a delightfully scary experience or something steeped in tradition, don’t let this season escape you. There is also time to resrve your destination for Turkey Day Travels. Stay tuned for the next blog.

Hello Friends!
